Back in late 1990ies when I was working as a regional director for the American Cancer Society I could never have imagined that I would be doing the work I am doing today. As I scan my life and past jobs as a chamber of commerce director, a life coach, a human services director and before that an actress, radio producer, world traveler and yes, even a welfare single mom, I see that every single thing I learned from those jobs serves me now. But now, what I do not only supports my life, but is deeply nourishing to my spirit and hopefully serves a higher purpose in society.
“Do what you love”. These are the words my mother whispered in my ear every day. The same words I passed on to my own children. Does it require a certain amount of courage? Yes. Absolutely. Is it worth it? There is no doubt. So how to begin the process of shifting your passion into your career?
  1. Take stock of all the work you have done and notice what you have enjoyed about each one. Then look for connections or overlap. In my case ( I am a Tibetan bowl sound healer and teacher) all my jobs involved some degree of multiculturalism, empowering people, organizing of ideas, events or perspectives. And those are the aspects of each job I loved.
  1. Notice if there is a yearning to learn more about something or seeing someone doing something you would love to do but don’t think you can. Take this as a sign! We so easily dismiss our inner signposts the subtle messages we receive because our belief systems don’t match up. I loved the one on one connection and the spiritual side of energy work but didn’t pay much attention to it until I was desperate to find a better outlet for my talents. I loved doing presentations at work because it used my performance skills. Now I travel internationally doing educational sound healing concerts. Who would have thought!
  1. Get clear that ANY transition has an aspect of fear. Never allow fear to deter you from your hearts desire. When you follow your passion, the universe usually meets you. ( When I packed up my belongings and moved to California I had no idea how things would work out. I sold or gave away almost everything I owned and said goodbye to friends and family. But I did that after having spent 2 years learning the amazing modality I now practice and teach. I knew it would take time to establish clients and was prepared to do whatever I needed to make some money while I met people and started a client base. It took several months and many free introductory sound healing mini concerts and sessions. Now I have a flourishing practice in an effective and compelling modality that keeps me centered as I help others.
  1. “Yes, but” That phrase is a dream assassin. Just stick with “Yes” Did you know that good theater improvisation is based on the ability to say “yes” to every situation? “Yes” keeps the energy moving. So improvise with life in a manner that you can find the ‘yes, and” in situations. Look for what is possible rather than what is not. You would be surprised how fast things move forward by doing this. Simple but not easy. I had to keep reminding myself and noticing the ways I was sabotaging my own efforts. As I have become able to manifest my own dreams, I become better at helping others do the same. I love working with my Tibetan bowls because they help raise consciousness, my own and that of others.
  1. Don’t be afraid to be different. It is great to be the first or the only one doing something. If your passion seems a bit wacky- all the better. Really, how many Tibetan bowl sound healers do you know? I was one of the first. It is easier to distinguish oneself when what you do is unique. If what you want to do is not unique then know and be confident that what you bring to it makes it so. Own that completely. Now just go for it.

New Year Blessing

With the wonderful Blue Moon this month to celebrate the New Year, it is an especially powerful time to offer blessings as well as to energize the highest vision of ourselves. Here is a lovely traditional Tibetan Buddhist Blessing to recite while playing your Sacred Sound Instruments. Remember that the tingshas awaken dormant energies, so are good to play at the start of your meditation, the gantas move energy, so played in a clockwise direction will send your blessing out into the universe, and the Tibetan singing bowls will harmonize or align energy.. so good to play in a sustained manner that helps to integrate the vibration of the words into the every day world.
May I become at all times, both now and forever, a protector of those without protection.
A guide for those who have lost their ways
A ship for those with oceans to cross
a bridge for those with rivers to cross
a sanctuary for those in danger
a lamp for those without light
a place of refuge for those who lack shelter
and a servant to all in need.

- 14th Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso)

On another note I seek new venues to perform my sound healing Tibetan Bowl and Planetary Gong Sacred Sound concert in. I have toured with this concert for over six years and now offer a new performance. The areas I seek are in Arizona, anywhere in California or Nevada side of the Sierra's and in northern California. Space needs to be large enough to hold a minimum of 35 people. Please email me at diane@soundenergyhealing.com and have a look at the video here

Tibetan Bowl School Advanced Class

The first Advanced 1 workshop of our Tibetan Bowl School took place in September. Students are serious about learning advanced skills that will make them not just adequate practitioners, but GREAT practitioners. You all know that my soap box is about the plethora of untrained sound healers who rely on intuition alone. No one would hire a massage therapist, a craniosacral therapist or a reflexologist who just relied on intuition. Intuition is great but it is not enough. Students that come out of this program will be well trained in the the Buddhist tradition that accompanies the instruments- so they use them correctly , understand elemental energy lines, how to co-create intensly effective visualizations for clients and how to work with the symbology of illness. They will have the highest quality hand hammered ancient instruments to work with as well. Want to get involved? Check us at at http://www.tibetanbowlschool.com

Finding the Still Spot

I don't want to preach or whine, and hope my musing comes across as intended. Over many years of living in the United States, I have noticed that a modality, or a products makes itself known and shortly thereafter becomes a craze. Why not? If something is great we want to share it with as many people as possible. However, I am now seeing a development with the Tibetan sacred sound instruments that causes some concern. That is, the tendency for people to purchase them, take my course, ( or someone else's) ... and still miss the point. The point being, the instruments are about Self Transformation first and foremost- then about working with others. It seems that as soon as someone gets one of these fantastic instruments they want to show it, play it, and create a sound healing for others. Of course, it is natural to share the excitement of it all. From my perspective tho, it is a bit like showing others how to meditate or do yoga when one hasn't established a real practice or level of skill oneself. True, the bowls do lend themselves to sharing with others, but the journey with the 'self' is such a powerful gift it is a pity when it is overlooked.

Tibetan bowls are great instruments of healing and transformation in the Buddhist tradition. They gently guide us to our still spot, a place of great quiet where we can feel our interconnection to all things. They help us to experience the texture of 'allowing' vs 'doing' and to extend that texture into more and more areas of our every day lives. My hope is that all that come upon these instruments will take plenty of time to know them, before using them for the benefit of others. In this way they will have developed the skill and knowledge to be the best guide and witness for someone else's journey.
