OK so I always stop halfway through my Sierra tour at the Sierraville hotsprings. It is a fabulous, funky but very lovely spot on 900 acres of pristine wooded hills and praries. The springs themselves present in several forms... a beautiful outdoor warm pool built into a deck and natural hot tub in a wooden dome overlooking the valley peppered with cows and surrounded by mountains; claw footed bathtubs all over the property with tubes of hot mineral water running into them,; a silence only meditation pool in the woods that is a sandy bottomed stone encircled hole in the ground! It is all great and I stay there in exchange for presenting a short tibetan bowls sound healing workshop and mini-concert. So it is now evening and the event is about to begin only there is no way to dim the lights in the room. I suggest that people (who are all on their backs ready for the concert) cover their eyes with something. The next time I look up, one young woman has taken my message to heart of 'being totally in present moment and available to life as it comes." She has nothing to cover her eyes with and simply removes her dress to do so and remains comfortably sprawled out on the floor totally naked. I can only smile.

Traveling with a Tibetan Bowl Sound Healer

My concert tours are always a combination of wonder, delight, humor, frustration and exhaustion. People have a romantic idea of what it is like to tour.. So in these next days I will attempt to offer a few snapshots into life on the road from my most recent trip into the Sierra Nevada's. This is a circut I take in May and October because the weather is usually gorgeous then and it is delightful to be in the small northern mountain towns. Of course in the past it has always managed to snow at least one day..enough for me to be forced to purchase chains for my tires so I could get over the mountain near Tahoe....

After months of calling around, confirming, then changing and reconfirming dates and venues the sound healing tour is finally set.
Day One of a twelve day concert tour really begins several weeks before with middle of the night thoughts of 'what I must remember to take with me" for 12 concerts, several private sessions, a house clearing, sleeping gear, sales items, data collecting items, visa machine, food, computers, chains for the car in case of snow, down time items (ie books, paints, folding bike), schedule of where to be when to set up, venue phone numbers and about a million more items. Of course I have a check list but that seems to always be changing so a pad of paper by the bed is vital!

Then I must make sure the car is ready with the oil changed, tires ready, books on cd, gas tank full for the nearly 2,000 mile trip. It is no fun to have car problems on the road with all the equipment, money, cd's and other sales items stuffed into the back. And all this between clients, attending to my students and the general work of maintaining my small business.

When the day actually arrives, I normally get in my car at 4:30 am in order to make the 9 hour drive north to my first destination and miss sitting in traffic in L.A. Timing is important as I need to get to my destination in enough time to get in a short bike ride, food and a nap or I will not be totally out of it for my first evening concert. A celebratory Frappachino on the road is always part of the ritual.. and yes, with a bit of whipped cream because day one is a special day and I have been doing green smoothies religiously so I can do this!

But this tour is different. My first stop is only a few hours away in Ojai. I have never performed singing bowls and gongs at this place before and am looking forward to being in that beautiful town. Healing in America is a lovely wooden and spacious building with cathedral ceilings that offers a variety of modalities. The owner is British and very pleasant. A small group of three help me to move chairs out of the way and reorganize the room to set up my equipment.We have to figure out a way to position the light show and manage to do it by tacking up some sheets. It is hot hot hot but I then take off on my little bike for a couple of hours of revitalization and in search of some good nourishment. I manage to always find a sweet bike path, even in the most remote of towns. Biking is much better than walking on a path because often bike paths are homes to the homeless and I feel safer on my bike than walking past groups of guys under a bridge or something.

Evening: the room fills up, the concert works perfectly, people are delighted and ask a lot of questions. They linger and their curiosity is refreshing. It has been a long day and I am very tired. The lovely British owner says this has been 'exceptional' and hands me an envelope with a check. Great! Later when I look at it I see that it contains only 1/2 of the evenings proceeds. But this is much less than my normal fee. No matter. He has gone home and I will leave him a nice note saying that there must be a mistake because in the 'logistics' on my press packet the split of the door is clearly stated... I hate having to run after money. It dampens the whole experience for me and brings in a smallness that is uncomfortable. But this is my life.. so .... End result. Nope. He thinks that is fair. No compromise, no acknowledgement of the original email... So.. I will not be going back there as beautiful as it was. Maybe another space or another town.

Contentment

A few nights ago I went to hear Sogyal Ripoche speak. He is a well known Tibetan Buddhist teacher who wrote the Tibetan Book of Living and Dieing. The lecture was about controlling the mind and was fascinating and simple at the same time. That seems to be true of many Buddhist teachings..He said that to transform the mind we had to understand its true nature.. Well- what the heck is that?? It is a mind free from grasping, endless thoughts, emotions and stories; those things that create Samsara where we are lost in the projections of the mind.

The true nature of the mind, he said, is Nirvana- the mind turned inward; a state of non-distraction. The absence of "I" within actions taken.

In thinking about this I realized that this is exactly the state of mind I speak of to my Tibetan bowl sound healing students when I describe "Presencing". Presencing is the ability to be with a client with no agenda, with full attention towards them. Most of us can relate to the notion of "holding the space", for something. The true nature of the mind then must be like holding the space for oneself. Just being present to what is without attachment, projection, or stories. This state of non distraction can also be described as meditation-- active or passive. Either way it is a good place to be.

We Are What We Believe

Really, it is so simple to change a circumstance. We need to change our attitude and thoughts about it. That is not to say it is easy. Changing our thoughts from habitual to chosen is something we have the opportunity to practice over and over throughout our lifetime. Every challenging situation, every person we have trouble with, every circumstance we experience as negative is such an opportunity. One way to think about this is to recognize that any relationship is really a reflection of the part of you that shows up in that relationship. This includes our relationship with ourselves. This morning a quote from Beliefnet came across my desk and seemed reflect this issue.

"Whatever attitudes we habitually use toward ourselves, we will use on others, and whatever attitutes we habitually use on others, we will use on ourselves. This situation is comparable to serving food to ourselves and to other people from the same bowl. Everyone ends up eating the same thing-we must examine carefully what we are dishing out. "

Fortunately, we have support: Positive people, books and activities that help to shift our thinking patterns from rote to chosen train us. Sound healing sessions and meditations with the Tibetan Singing Bowls are effective in helping us to become conscious of our belief systems and actions, and to reawaken us to our true essence, which is always compassionate and loving. This is their purpose, to transform consciousness and create healing.

Did you know that sound or hearing is one of the first senses that we develop? A human fetus can hear its mothers voice when it is only 18 weeks old. Though researchers are still learning about how sound effects the growing brain at this stage, one thing is for sure; sound, especially high frequency sound increases the electrical potential of the brain. The high frequencies in sound healing through Tibetan singing bowls uses this to induce our brains into deep meditative and peaceful states which aids all aspects of healing.
In addition, the vagus nerve, known as the traveler nerve, goes from out brain stem to all the major organs in our bodies. This nerve has antennas in our inner ear so the healing properties of the singing bowls is also delivered in this manner to speed up the healing process.

Cardiorespiratory synchronization

An article written by D Cysarz & A. Bussing spoke of a report done which examined the effects of meditation on breathing oscillations and the modulations of heart rate.An electrocardiogram and a respiratory trace were recorded simultaneously as a series of tests were conducted. The bottom line was that "The high degree of cardiorespiratory synchronization during meditation in unexperienced meditators suggests that the physiological implications of meditation does not require prior experience in meditation."

Using Tibetan bowls in sessions works as in internal opiate and reduces pain as it initiates the relaxation response. This, combined with cardiorespiratory synchronization creates of the body a perfect container for healing. It has been my experience that people who are not accustomed to meditating (as well as those who are) are able to achieve a deep level of altered consciousness much faster during singing bowl sessions than in other forms of meditation.

Using Music for Brain Food

School is very competitive these days. Actually life is very competitive. Everyone is looking for a way to get a little edge over the next guy or gal. Although I believe that cooperation and not competition is the way to go, maximizing your brain's potential certainly can't hurt. Today there is ample research documenting that that music is far more than just entertainment. And yet we know that when school officials cut the budget, music is one of the first things to go. In a recent study headlined "TEXAS ALL-STATE MUSICIANS SCORE 196 POINTS ABOVE NATIONAL AVERAGE ON THE 2000 SAT" the Texas music educators association reported that students involved in orchestra, band, or chorus had higher scores on their SAT's than students who were not involved in a music program. The students who scored highest were those in the schools' string orchestras.

Another interesting story comes from The Chronicle of Higher Education, July 11, 1997. In an article entitled "For The Sake Of Science: The Arts Deserve Support," Robert S. Root-Bernstein, Professor of Physiology at Michigan State University makes many fascinating points about how science and the arts have intersected in order to make our world a better and a safer place. For example, Music can also produce insights useful to science and technology. Take "frequency hopping," in which coded signals are sent along a constantly changing set of frequencies so that the signals can be neither intercepted nor blocked. In 1942, the composer George Antheil and the actress Hedy Lamar suggested using the melody of a song as a way of sending signals in Morse code. The person receiving the message would already know what song was being used and constantly retune his receiver to the frequency of the next note in the song to hear the Morse-code version of the next letter in the message. Someone who didn't know which song was being used would have no idea what frequency to listen to. The concept has spawned hundreds of patents and is the basis of many of the secure communications systems now used by the U.S. military.

Of course, no one can guarantee that getting your child involved in music will produce astounding results or great inventions or discoveries. What I can almost guarantee is a lot of fun, satisfaction, and a boost in self-esteem for child and probably for parent. Again, research has shown that students who are actively involved in music programs (and other programs at school) are less likely to become involved in gang activity and other negative behaviors because they have discovered and reinforced positive behavioral skills.

Breath, Sound and the Universe

At the end of a recent yoga and Tibetan Bowl event. I mentioned that our breath is not really 'ours' because it has been part of the universe forever. The breath we inhale might have gone around the universe many times, into oceans, through mountains, animals... It may have been breathed by Buddha, or Jesus or Hitler or Mohammed before reaching us. And our exhalation will go out and circulate for ever as well... One person had a strong reaction to the mention of Hitler and wanted to know why he was mentioned. Here is my response: What do you think??

The Tibetan instruments are all about the interconnectedness of all things. All things, no exceptions. It is much easier to be open to feelings of universal connectedness when it comes to what we know and love... The whole point of sound healing, and especially of the gong.. is to help us to stretch our boundaries to that which feels like a challenge. The belief is that everyone has the seed of the divine within them.. What they do with it can be a manifestation of love or hate. But the seed, the essence is always one of divine perfection. And all of us..have the ability to express love or hate.. we have all human emotion within us and we have choice as to what we do with it. When you hear the gong and you allow its strong vibrations to course through you - you are opening and accepting of what could be a huge and painful challenge should you decide to resist it. The mention of Hitler is only to say, that we recognize it all- the entire spectrum of human behavior because it is part of us all.. I think we all recognize that the direction Hitler took was an abaration but the sound is about getting to a place of compassion that is so deep that we can condemn the behavior but still recognize the essence within any human being. It is not easy but it is the mark of expanding consciousness.

I have a story to tell you about oranges. One in particular that came with me last week when I went to Las Vegas to do a concert, some healing sessions and then 2 days of kayaking... Oranges are great on trips because they hold up so well. We were on the Colorado river in a place where there were natural hot springs in the hills just above the camping area. We climbed up there to sit in the mineral bath and I had an orange in my pocket. Along the way I noticed a small group of people with one large man who was sitting with his head in his hands. He had fainted from being in the tub too long and couldn't get down the mountain. Every time he stood up he fell down. He had a cut on his nose from one of the falls and was bleeding. As I walked by I heard someone was saying that he needed sugar so I gave him the orange. For the next 2 days every single person I passed on the river from that group thanked me for overhearing their conversation. They said that it was only after eating the orange that he was able to walk without fainting and that all they had was water. Normally, eavesdropping is not considered to be in good taste but responding to what I heard turned out to be a gift for this man. What is really cool about the whole situation tho is where the orange came from. I had gifted a client of mine who is suffering from cancer a free sound healing session. A few days later he turned up at the cancer clinic where I work with a huge bag of oranges from his orchard. So the orange was the energy of gifting from one person to another. I wonder what gift the man who ate the orange will pass along...

Toning Workshop

I just attended an Overtoning workshop with Wayne Perry. He has written some excellent books on the subject and his cd's have also been instrumental in helping to learn overtoning basics. The workshop itself was disappointing because of the teaching style. Teaching is different than making music, or writing-- and the style of his presentations just did not sit well with me. However, there were several wonderful gems to be had. One was the ability to tone ones name the way it was said as a child with all the negative connotations ( ie.when we were in trouble) Also including the adaptations of our name we didn't especially enjoy-- or used to make fun of us. After energetically repeating our name that way for a minute or so..enough time to release the energy of it, we toned our name the way we want to hear it now.. respectfully, sweetly, appreciatively etc. An adaptation of that activity is something I use in my private tibetan bowl sound healing sessions to help clients release pain - physical or emotional. They make the sound of the pain and then replace it with a soothing sound. It is surprisingly powerful. I would love to hear from those of you who do the name exercise above. Mind Traps

The last couple of days have been triggers for some very old stuff to come up. Just when we think we are past it, old stories come back up and it can be so discouraging to feel ourselves going backwards. Disappointment at ourselves for having the issue resurface, annoyance that we have to face it again, the pain of the issue itself and then of course- scornful self judgment that we are not bigger than all of this ( haven't I evolved at all??) So after 2 days of being in blue funk mode I realized that I had not gotten into any arguments because of my trigger, that I had performed all the intended tasks for that time period, that I had allowed myself the time to be silent so I could think about how to best express myself without shaming or blaming anyone else, that although I felt sad I was not running away from my feelings and that I recognized and stopped myself from spiraling into 'story' mode. Then I realized that in addition to being in the moment with my feelings, I was also watching myself live them and making choices about which way to go with things. This, I believe is an influence from working with the singing bowls over time. Perspective. I can see that I have grown and that even when old issues resurface, I respond differently and work through them much faster. Getting back into alignment as I go through my paces. Could it be the cellular memory of the Tibetan bowl vibrations that have strengthened my ablility to face challenges? I believe this to be true.

Looking for Venues

Every year I take several wonderful journeys to various places to offer Tibetan bowl sound healing concerts, workshops and private sessions. One of my favorite places is the Sierra Nevadas with the beautiful vistas, the charming towns, and when there is time, a stopover at Sierraville hot springs. I revisit places I have been and seek new venues. This year I plan to tour in May and would love some suggestions for new places: large yoga studios, churches, even small group gatherings. The idea is to travel up the coast from Encinitas then cross over to places like Folsom, Auburn, Reno and come back via Fresno... So anything around that route would be great. Sound energy healing is gaining more and more recognition internationally. Sarasvati's Dream Inspires Book

The Spirit of Sound

Last week I had the great fortune to be on a large sail boat in La Paz, Mexico. We spent a few
days out at sea and were delighted when a large pod of gray whales came near us to breach for about an hour. The sight of their huge bodies bounding in and out of the water was magnificent, but the booming sound of their voices silenced us. It was like a call from beyond time and space. It touched a part of my soul that recognized the connection to all things. Upon return home, this quote arrived on my computer:

" For there is nothing in this world that can help one spiritually more than music. Meditation prepares, but music is the highest for touching perfection."

Yesterday, I conducted a Tibetan bowl sound healing session with one of my cancer clients. She said that each visit is like a sound meditation that leaves her with a sense of infinity. I realize that is also what I felt in the presence of the whale calls. There are just so many opportunities to feel gratitude in this life.

New Year Blessing

With the wonderful Blue Moon this month to celebrate the New Year, it is an especially powerful time to offer blessings as well as to energize the highest vision of ourselves. Here is a lovely traditional Tibetan Buddhist Blessing to recite while playing your Sacred Sound Instruments. Remember that the tingshas awaken dormant energies, so are good to play at the start of your meditation, the gantas move energy, so played in a clockwise direction will send your blessing out into the universe, and the Tibetan singing bowls will harmonize or align energy.. so good to play in a sustained manner that helps to integrate the vibration of the words into the every day world.

May I become at all times, both now and forever, a protector of those without protection.
A guide for those who have lost their ways
A ship for those with oceans to cross
a bridge for those with rivers to cross
a sanctuary for those in danger
a lamp for those without light
a place of refuge for those who lack shelter
and a servant to all in need.

Fundraiser for Tibetan Temple

It was an awesome place to do a sound healing concert. A huge home in San Diego with gardens, fountains, enormous fireplaces and expansive rooms. Setting up my Tibetan singing bowls and Chiron gong I had a feeling that the instruments were longing to sing. When Drupon Samten Rinpoche arrived with his assistant and set up Tibetan flags, jewelry and other items to sell, the setting felt complete. I played for an hour and as expected the bowls and gongs sang out like old friends. The best part was how well Rinpoche was able to express what I was doing with the instruments after the concert. He said that the music was an expression of beauty and peace. The gong I play in a textural manner and then expands into a crescendo of sound. Rinpoche said that our egos need to be overcome and the loud sound did just that- quieting the ego and allowing us to just feel ourselves in space/time without anything else going on. It was a lovely and accessible description of what I was doing. After that he offered a meditation and New Year Blessing. A perfect end to a wonderful day.

Sound Healing as a Mirror

At the end of this months intensive weekend workshop we did a partnered exercise that gave participants a view of themselves from someone else's perspective. In this way students got a glimpse of how they are perceived. One student was surprised at all the uplifting, true and lovely things that were said about her from her peers because her sense of herself was so negative. The feedback she got showed her that despite her inner critic, she is what she is.. and the jewel of that is visible to other people. Her whole being lit up as she permitted herself to open to her obvious gifts and relinquish her self sabotaging belief system. When we hold the vision of the best in others, they begin to see and experience that for themselves as well. When we speak to that, they hear it. The Sacred Sound family-Tibetan singing bowls, tingsa's, gantas and dorjes are effective tools in reawakening us to who we really are. We sentient beings are all moving, breathing instruments of sound and are capable of reawakening in others the best that is in them. As we journey into a new year I hope we can remember how powerful we are and keep blessing our environment with our love and compassionate words and deeds. Next Sound Healing Workshop is in January

I have been taking tap classes.. Yep- something fun to do that taxes the brain and the feet. It's great to be creating dynamic rhythmic patterns and I now find that the sound of the patterns stay in my mind for a long time. One thing that is great about learning new things is the opportunity to examine our thoughts -to make sure they are encouraging and positive even when faced with challenges and insecurity. We humans learn by repetition- steps, words, thoughts, actions. Over time the work done with sound energy healing with the Tibetan bowls has greatly transformed my own thoughts and actions and because of it learning new things is a source of great fun rather than frustration. Sound healing brings us back to our essence again and again and that helps have a positive perspective for whatever we do.

Kripalu Yoga & Sound

Yikes! I haven't been here in a while. No matter, life gets busy. I'm here now and getting ready to do a Kripalu Yoga class to Tibetan bowls with an extended meditation at the end. I have only spoken to the yoga instructor but we both feel totally comfortable with just doing it. Playing for yoga classes is the most natural thing.. just following the movements as they happen with the sound of the bowls.. changing up the pace, the volume, the textures of sound. For the students, the sound of the singing bowls and gong goes into their consciousness and their limbs making the poses even more meaningful and effortless. It is as though the sound carries them through the movement.. At least, that has been the reports. Over the years the voice of my inner critic has changed a great deal, thanks to working with the Tibetan singing bowls. These instruments that teach compassion through their magnificent voices, that touch the soul and help us to remember who we are have made a major impact on my own life and the lives of my sound healing students and clients. It is good to once in a while, acknowledge our accomplishments and the other day, when I surprised myself with a tone of voice that did not match the image of who I want to be.. I just stopped. This voice has been part of me for a long time and pops up now and then, when I am tired, irritated or rushed. It is a voice that does not feel good to me or to the person receiving it. I am speaking here of a tone of voice rather than words used. In working with the bowls daily, I am able to access the highest part of myself. I do not require that I walk around ignoring my humanity tho.. But in this case the tone just didn't feel acceptable anymore.. I recognized that I had far outgrown the need to express myself in that way. I just released it because it no longer serves me rather than because I felt I should. The tone has been replaced by a moment.. a pause, a silence in which I can make a decision rather than a habitual reaction. The singing bowls, bring us into alignment so in using them often alignment becomes the norm rather than the exception. In this way what is not in alignment falls away simply because it feels right. New Theraputic Tibetan Bowl Meditation CD

Finally, I got this done just before leaving on my month long journey to Europe ( in another post) I wanted to make a cd that would help my clients to continue the healing work we did in private sessions as well as for those who cannot get a private. Last night I played a sound healing concert in a health facility. I wanted to share this unusual experience with you. The room was nice enough but the ceiling was low, the floor carpeted and the acoustics not the best. The sponsors were welcoming, helpful and excited, many of them scientists. I was happy for the opportunity to introduce this modality to a group of people in the health field but as the room filled something felt off. In general I play in yoga studios, or places that have a strong spiritual connection. Here, that connection was not as evident- the people may have had this connection but not the space. When I started the concert my electronic tembura wouldn't work and the singing bowls sounded flat and discordant. People seemed to be shifting around quite a bit, there were babies who made quite a bit of noise, the owner decided to do something with the sound system in the middle of the concert that produced a loud hiss for several minutes...things that unsettled me.. Throughout the concert I was aware the the bowls just would not go into harmony with one another so I decided to play the gong earlier than usual in the evening. That did it for the audience. Within moments the power of that instrument settled people down and I returned to a group of bowls that were much more in harmony with eachother than how I had left them.. In the end, people raved about their experiece but I still felt uncomfortable and my Tibetan bowls definately did too.

Tibetan Bowl School News

The last of the Tibetan bowl school June Intro classes was completed on June 20/21. It was evident from the students that most people do not know how to choose quality instruments. Students arrived with their collection of tingshas and bowls to show me with hopes of adding to their collections after the course. There were a few good bowls in the group but most of the bowls that came into the class had a tinny sound, few and faint harmonic overtones and the sound of the instruments faded away quickly. This is not the quality one would desire for sound healing sessions. Tingshas were suitable for getting attention but completly unacceptable for use as a diagnostic tool. They had a great deal of chatter, no lingering tone, and felt piercing rather than awakening in texture. During the weekend when students had the opportunity to listen to really good quality instruments, they began to hear tones and textures that they had not heard before. It was the first time for many of them that they were able to assess quality of sound. This was a great revelation to them and will serve them well for future selection of the sacred sound instruments.

Many people view concert touring as a romantic thing. That is certainly part of touring but a great deal of it is also driving huge distances, loading and unloading heavy equipment, sleeping on mats and having little choice about available healthy foods. It is a lot of hard work away from home and normally an excellent support to annual income too!  I just returned from a wonderful Tibetan bowl sound healing concert tour in the Sierra's  What a beautiful part of the country that is. The tour was a great success on many levels although the economic situation really made itself felt.  Part way through the tour I decided to let go of financial goals and dedicated this to be a  "Service tour" .  In that way I could totally give myself to the sound healing concerts and not think about or be dissappointed by the financial aspects.  The folks I met were wonderful, the weather beautiful, and bags of delicious fat red cherries were all over the little roads in farm stands.  I was gone for 12 days of concerts, workshops and private healing sessions.  In the end I did just fine financially, but the tour was the best ever because I was able to let go of that part of it.  One of the instruments I play during the tour is a Chiron gong.. an amazing instrument that through sound teaches us to 'see the gift in the wound" -- to transmute challenges into something for deepening... This tour was an opportunity for me to do just that and I feel so blessed.  Just wanted to share that with y'all.   Blessings.

Ancient Bowls, New Bowls

The other day a friend of mine was raving about the sound meditations offered by a friend of hers. The person in question is a sweet, open hearted being who offers these meditations from a place of great authenticity. He uses new bowls. For most of the people who attend the meditations, they are the only bowls they have ever heard. I invited my friend to experience as sound healing session at my home. She was speechless. Never had she heard such magnificent tones and harmonics. Not just that, she felt the energy of the blessings and mantras offered by the monks during the making of the bowls. This is part of their inheritance and it is infinate in nature. My friend began to stutter and smatter about how completely different the experience was.. and she really "got it" about the energetic, tonal and experiential difference between the old bowls, made for consciousness transformation and healing, and new bowls, often machine made and made for commerce. It was obvious.

People are always wanting to get a lot of bowls at a cheap price. I maintain that one old bowl of high quality is so much more than several newer ones. The students that come to my school often want an entire set of bowls right away. I suggest they get no more than three high quality ones to work with for a while.To really develop a relationship with a few good bowls takes time. That is not to say that all old bowls are good. Today there are less and less high quality ancient bowls available. There is so much one must take into consideration when purchasing a bowl. Does the vendor have a direct relationship with the supplier in Nepal or Tibet. If so, for how long. Was the bowl purchased from a wholesaler in the USA who brings in other products? I get my bowls from a Tibetan Buddhist who has a 30 year relationship with the Tibetans and goes over there to maintain that relationship on a regular basis. This is so important to establishing trust and being sure that we get the best of the best instruments.

Sound Healing Session Surprise.

I got this blog from a woman who came to a sound healing session with no idea of what it was. This is the entry in her blog which I thought might amuse y'all. The title is
Cranky Pants Meets Tibetan Bowls.

Some folks are adventurous optimists. They assume that all new experiences will be fun. Ask one of these folks: "Hey, optimist, wanna go Naked Ice Fishing in the Antarctic?" Chances are they'll say "Sure, count me in!" And even if they go naked ice fishing, catch nothing but a bad cold and even lose a few extremities to frostbite in the process, you can still ask them next time: "Hey optimist, want to go sunbathing in the Sahara?" And their answer will be: "Sure, count me in!"
And then there are their opposites. I am one of these creatures. You can call us "party poopers," or just say we're "cautious." We are picky about how we spend our time. We assume that most new things outside of the tried-and-true will NOT be fun. Our default answer to most new activities is "no thanks!"

Before you say "how terrible! That's so limiting!" keep in mind that our ability to say "no thanks" is often hard-won. Most of us crankypants cautious types have been talked into outings and parties and performances for decades and we've been assured we will LOVE them. And then we go, only find ourselves bored, anxious, disappointed, or annoyed. We've learned to trust our own instincts and ignore the enthusiastic promises of the adventurous optimists. Don't get me wrong: we Party Poopers still have plenty of fun; we're just way more selective about how we have it.

All this is to say that while in San Diego, Crabby McSlacker, queen of the Crankypants Party Poopers, got talked into a "Sound Energy Healing" session involving the playing of Tibetan singing bowls (and bells and gongs and other exotic objects).

How did this happen? Well, it was one of those situations where despite some skepticism I couldn't really decline unless I wanted to be a total... what's the female equivalent of a prick, anyway? So the Cautious Crab went off with the Lobster to a sound healing session, generously offered by a friend's mother who happens to be a certified Tibetan bowl practitioner (and a very cool person).

So what does a Tibetan Singing Bowl Sound Healing session entail, and does research say it's effective or is it just a whole lot of hooey?

The Science of Sound
Actually, there does seem to research backing the notion that various kinds of sound, music and rhythms can have healing powers. According to oncologist, Mitchell Gaynor, "We know that music is capable of enhancing immune function, lowering heart rate, lowering stress-related hormones like cortisol that raise our blood pressure and depress our immune systems." Other research suggests that music "trims complications after heart attack, calms anxiety, slows breathing and increases production of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers."

Gaynor is a big proponent of using Tibetan bowls to help cancer patients, but says that there is more going on than just the effects of relaxation. He implies that there is something special about these bowls that taps into spiritual energy that can help cancer patients heal.

Furthermore, in a sound healing article in the New York Times, one practitioner explained: "When the body is sick - it could be a cold, a broken bone, an ulcer, a tumor, or an emotional or mental illness - it's all a matter of the frequencies of the body being out of tune, off balance, out of synch. Vibration can help bring that back into balance."

Er... maybe. I'm frankly skeptical about the whole vibrational balance explanation. I think that there is so much evidence about the beneficial effects of stress reduction, meditation, and even placebo power that we don't even need to go there. But hey, if people believe that the sound vibrations are going into their bodies and messing with their cells in positive ways and resetting their frequencies or whatever, I think that's a good thing, whether it's true or not!

What is a Tibetan Bowl Sound Session Like?
It's pretty cool.

We went into a room that had dozens of Tibetan bowls of all sizes as well as some bells and who knows what else. (If I were a proper reporter instead of a lazy blogger, I probably would have thought to ask what all the stuff was). Tibetan bowls can be struck or rubbed, and they have a very rich sound with lots of overtones. Apparently they are tuned to the frequency of "aum." In more technical terms, they sound pretty.

As instructed, we removed our shoes, lay down on a comfortable mat, were covered by a blanket, and were given nice little eye pillow thingies. This triggered pleasant massage associations and was a nice surprise.

Then I start to forget the order of things. Did our host make the trance-inducing suggestions about letting go and ripples and ponds and hearts blossoming open and such before she put the bowls on our chests and bellies? Or did the cool bell tones and chimes start first and then the suggestions and then the belly bowls?

Anyway, I do at least remember that the sounds the bowls made being struck and rubbed all around us (and on us) were VERY soothing. The tones were rich and warm and layered and luxurious. Because I could feel the vibrations, the sounds seemed to worm their way into deeper places in my head and body than regular music normally goes.

By the end, I was so relaxed I could barely speak.

I didn't go in with any specific medical issues to deal with, so I can't attest to the pain-relieving, disease-fighting properties of Tibetan bowls, but I can say that they are pretty wonderful things to be around. As someone who sucks at meditation, I am always looking for ways to turn down the mental chitter chatter a few notches. (Which is not to say that the yapping in my brain went away entirely, but at least it was contented, meandering, quieter yapping).

Anyway, the Crankypants Crab will continue to defend to her dying day the practice of saying "no thanks!" to new experiences. But, um... sometimes new experiences actually turn out to be awesome. (Thanks Diáne!)

Tibetan Bowl School Advanced Class

The first Advanced 1 workshop of our Tibetan Bowl School took place in September. Students are serious about learning advanced skills that will make them not just adequate practitioners, but GREAT practitioners. You all know that my soap box is about the plethora of untrained sound healers who rely on intuition alone. No one would hire a massage therapist, a craniosacral therapist or a reflexologist who just relied on intuition. Intuition is great but it is not enough. Students that come out of this program will be well trained in the the Buddhist tradition that accompanies the instruments- so they use them correctly , understand elemental energy lines, how to co-create intensly effective visualizations for clients and how to work with the symbology of illness. Re-Aligning with the Fundamental

Healing is simple, but not easy. Being in resonance with 'What Is' is being in harmony with nature. This includes being in resonance even with things we dislike. When resonance is established through intentionally opening to it, we may experience the Fundamental vibration of the Universe ( AUM- the vibration of Universal Perfection). We can neither chase nor force it; we can only receive it and in doing so, discover what it is.

Healing is not separating from a hindrance, it is opening fully to it, embracing, accepting and honoring it. Through the act of opening, the Fundamental is revealed. It is in the vibration of the Fundamental that the miracle of Spontaneous Healing can occur; when we awaken to how everything is interrelated; how even illness, car crashes and the worst news is an agent of healing. A challenge can illuminate our blind spots- our areas of vulnerability NOT to destroy us but to awaken us to those areas of ourselves so we may become whole. That we do by giving attention to and strengthening that part of ourselves. Healing is a spiritual awakening that impacts on our physical body and the whole of our lives. It is a transformation of consciousness.

For most of us there is so much resistance to opening to distress that we need tools, ambassadors to help us. Tibetan bowls, meditation, chanting and toning are just some of the wonderful tools available to help us cease interrupting the pattern of the Fundamental which exists in all things and reopen to the fullness that is our birthright.

Finding the Still Spot

I don't want to preach or whine, and hope my musing comes across as intended. Over many years of living in the United States, I have noticed that a modality, or a products makes itself known and shortly thereafter becomes a craze. Why not? If something is great we want to share it with as many people as possible. However, I am now seeing a development with the Tibetan sacred sound instruments that causes some concern. That is, the tendency for people to purchase them, take my course, ( or someone else's) ... and still miss the point. The point being, the instruments are about Self Transformation first and foremost- then about working with others. It seems that as soon as someone gets one of these fantastic instruments they want to show it, play it, and create a sound healing for others. Of course, it is natural to share the excitement of it all. From my perspective tho, it is a bit like showing others how to meditate or do yoga when one hasn't established a real practice or level of skill oneself. True, the bowls do lend themselves to sharing with others, but the journey with the 'self' is such a powerful gift it is a pity when it is overlooked.

Tibetan bowls are great instruments of healing and transformation in the Buddhist tradition. They gently guide us to our still spot, a place of great quiet where we can feel our interconnection to all things. They help us to experience the texture of 'allowing' vs 'doing' and to extend that texture into more and more areas of our every day lives. My hope is that all that come upon these instruments will take plenty of time to know them, before using them for the benefit of others. In this way they will have developed the skill and knowledge to be the best guide and witness for someone else's journey.

Sound Healing Practitoners or Technicians

Over the years I receive so many questions and comments about the Himalayan sacred sound instruments. Normally they are about how to play them for someone else's benefit. The questions themselves inform me about the owner and his/her degree of understanding regarding the instruments. Many questions have to do with technique, but having a technical understanding of patterns and layouts does not make a great practitioner. The instruments come from the Buddhist tradition which strongly emphasizes going inward. Spending tons of time discovering the different voices in the instrument for oneself and being able to call those voices forth is an essential part of the healing process.

One woman wrote telling me that if she rang the ganta it would break up energy in the entire house, and asked if she could just sing it instead. This let me know that the woman did not spend much time working with her instrument to discover it... but only to use it. All the instruments, tingsha's, ganta's and bowls have so many textures of sound to experience. In the case of the ganta- it can be rung so gently that it sounds like a drop of water- an ever so gentle tap, tap, tap of the clacker to break up stuck energy. Breaking up energy doesn't always require a bulldozer. But the ganta can be a bulldozer too! Each instrument can be played to offer a neutral, awakening, energizing or soothing sound. Each of these sound textures has a role in the healing process if the time to discover them for oneself is taken.

Silence in Sound Healing

Tibetan bowls have such beautiful overtones and beneficial vibrations it is tempting to strike them over and over again. But I consider Silence as a major player in sessions. In general people strike the bowls too loud, too fast and too often. Silence has texture, weight and purpose. In a sound healing session it is the place where consciousness extends into that delicious sense of expanding/dissolving into eternity. When a bowl is struck.. let the sound linger. In our society, we are uncomfortable with silence and so must train ourselves to relax into it a bit more. Remember that when a bowl is struck around the head, the receiver hears them longer and louder than you do. The bowls were created to expand and transform our consciousness... Silence is where that happens.

Tibet: Responding to a Tragedy

His Holiness the Dalai Lama says" Adopting an attitude of universal responsibility is essentially a personal matter. The real test of compassion is not what we say in abstract discussions, but how we conduct ourselves in daily lives"

There is so much tragedy in the world today. We could get thoroughly depressed. Or we could acknowledge our feelings and take an action- holding fast to the belief that what we do, however small does have an impact. It may not be visible in our lifetimes, but that must not sabotage the knowledge that we are effecting change. In the case of Tibet, to speak out against the unthinkable wrongdoings that are going on is an act of compassion towards both ourselves and the people of Tibet. Sound Healing Ethics

Over the past couple of years so called sound healers have been popping up all over the world. Since there are no national standards for this modality yet, the range of practitioner skill goes from " I know how to hit the bowl" to "quite effective" and everywhere in between. In the realm of Tibetan bowls, Sound Energy Healing is opening a school in association with Sacred Sound Workshops to set a high standard of practice with certification for those who wish to use the sacred sound instruments in their healing practice. The course of study offers a home study course ( now available) , an intensive introductory hands on workshop and three advanced level workshops followed by an evaluation. The time frame for certification will be about 18 months-2 years and the location will be San Diego. The time in between workshops will ensure plenty of practice time for students. Our intention is to standardize a level of skill for anyone who uses these instruments outside of their own personal needs. Every other modality has a level of skill and hundreds of hours of practice required before receiving certification. We have observed a very low standard of practice among Tibetan bowl practitioners simply because most just make up what they do and how.. and that seems good enough for them. How to Choose a Tibetan Bowl

There are two questions I get all the time. One is 'How do I choose a good bowl" and the other is 'How do I know which bowl is good for a specific chakra' People also call to obtain a bowl with a certain musical note. The answers to these questions are founded in the Eastern philosophy rather than from a Western mindset, because this better reflects the nature of the instruments as they were intended:

Choosing a good bowl requires a few things. Quality: Either an eye and an ear for excellent quality- or knowing and trusting someone who knows the bowls and can help you. Many people sell bowls and most are new and machine made to look old. Many people who sell bowls in shops and on the internet are not very knowledgable.. so ask a lot of questions. When someone says a bowl is old.. in this country old can mean 50 years. That is new by my standards. A real old bowl it will be at least 100 years old and more often hundreds of years old. If the vendor doesn't know the region the bowls were made in, and how the markings help distinguish the type of bowl.. they probably don't know much..Bowls were made in a variety of regions of Tibet and their shape and markings are telling. Some of the bowls have consciousness transformation as their primary intention, and some have physical healing. This can be determined by their shape. There is more about this and photos in my home study course available on my website. A high quality, ancient bowl is an investment. If it is inexpensive and old,then it was probably obtained in a less than honorable manner...A good bowl is an investment and the price can range from $110 for a very small bowl to thousands of $$ for a huge bowl. Get educated on what you will use the bowl for( ie healing, meditations, yoga practice, creativity etc). That will inform what bowls and how many would be most effective. I can help you here.

Tone: The tone of the bowls should linger for quite some time when struck. There should be several layers of tones you can hear that produce overlaying harmonics. When you hear a bowl, listen to your body. If it opens your heart, or moves you deeply in some manner; if you feel tingling all over, or the tone directly impacts one area of your body.. these are all good signs. Bowls were created for consciousness transformation and healing. You should feel their effect on you.

Bowls and Chakras. In the west we work with seven chakras. The Tibetans work with five regions of the body. The bowls were created to bring us back to our experience of the interrelationship of all things.. thus they are not calibrated to work on just one chakra.. Their very nature encompasses our wholeness. In this way they are very different instruments then the western counterparts- tuning forks and crystal bowls. However there are some bowls whose tone and size lend themselves more naturally to certain areas of the body. Lower tones for grounding, largest bowls by the feet, etc. This is too complex to go into in a blog but there is more on this in my home study course. But you must understand that even if you have only ONE bowl, it will impact all of you, and not just one chakra.

Tibetan Bowl and the Dog

In Phoenix a few weeks ago, I was giving a Tibetan bowl workshop for a group of healers and veterinarians. One had a dog who recently had surgery and was wearing a cast on one leg. She asked me if she could bring the dog into the room during the sound healing meditation and cautioned me that he was very 'sound sensitive". The group decided it would be fine and as I had given a concert for dogs in the past felt that he would swiftly settle down and enjoy the meditation with everyone else. He was very agitated when he came in, sniffing, moving around, and generally doing everything but settling down. No matter, thought I, he will succumb in a moment. I began to play for the group. He appeared more agitated and would not stay stay down even with his master draped over him. The group was ignoring him and most everyone seemed to be able to, despite him, find a still point. But I was curious at his continued agitation. I finally took my large grounding bowl and began to sing it softly as I got up. "This is for you"I thought as I slowly walked toward him. Then he did an amazing thing. He looked at me for the first time, right in the eyes and never dropped his gaze. We were as if hooked together through the eyes. He backed down to his haunches and put his head on his front paws still looking at me and didn't move until I had finished. There was absolutely no doubt that he knew this moment was specifically for him. My even gentle striking of several bowls before was too much for him, He liked a single bowl; this single bowl. And he wanted the playing of it to be directed at him, not the group. He had been invited into the room as a special guest and he wanted his due! Everyone else, feeling the silence came out of their meditations and looked at us. When I finished playing no one moved, including him, until I finally dropped the gaze to resume the workshop. It is a good day when complimentary therapies are integrated into the mainstream. Cancer patients are receiving state of the art care at the San Diego Cancer Center. In addition to their traditional treatments they are offered my Tibetan bowl sound healing, acupuncture, massage, chi-gong and more. Single Bowl Technique

Breathing the Bowl is a simple yet powerful technique of playing Tibetan Singing bowls that enhances the texture, sound, and most importantly- your relationship with the bowl. In a recent class I offered at the San Diego Cancer Center participants were given bowls and shown how to sing them. They were determined to make the bowls sing. After several minutes of listening to chattering bowls and seeing signs of frustration I signaled the group to stop. I guided them into a meditative breath that had extended, audible exhalations. When people seemed to be in their breath I invited to keep the focus on the breath and begin to sing the bowls as an extension of self. The sound came up softly and slowly. The room was enveloped in rich, beautiful tones that felt soothing and peaceful. When we ended I asked what the difference was between the first and second attempt at playing the bowls. They reported that the 2nd time they felt the vibration throughout their entire bodies, a deep sense of peace, joy and that healing was happening. They said they felt there was no separation between the sound and the self. The first time the bowls were played as objects to be conquered. When we play the Himalayan bowls as an invitation to sound - the experience is expansive and nourishing and it is possible to feel the Oneness with the sound. The Healing Power of Sound by Dr.Mitchel Gaynor is like the sound healers bible. Dr. Gaynor started using sound many years ago when he met a Tibetan monk and was awed by the sound of the instruments and the effect on his body/mind/spirit. The book is an exploration into his personal transformation from traditional medicine to a more holistic approach and the research and work he has done with cancer patients over the years. Although I am an advocate for using the ancient Himalayan singing bowls rather than the modern glass ones, Gaynor uses them both along with toning and visualization for effective and healing treatments for his patients. New CD Finally Ready

It has taken so so long but Sarasvati's Dream, my new CD is finally available. It was quite a journey to make the CD and the first one made with other wonderful musicians who contributed their gifts of vocals and digereedoo to the effort.

Sarasvati's Dream is quite different from my first CD (Return to OM) in that it was truly conceived of as a dream scape and so is more atmospheric then OM which was created to be more therapeutic. I will have sound clips available soon. Just wanted to share my excitement with y'all!!

Sarasvati’s Dream- The Stewardship Tour

Goal: To raise consciousness and acquire commitments from people regarding simple steps they can take to preserve resources and be peaceful stewards of the planet.

Method: A national concert tour of Sarasvati’s Dream (see below). Departing from San Diego in a donated fuel efficient vehicle, travel to Atlanta, GA, then up east coast to Portsmouth New Hampshire, returning to San Diego via the northern route. I am requesting $25,000 in sponsorships plus the car and the alternative fuel, from people and companies who are dedicated to the preservation of the resources and beauty of our planet. Major sponsors will be advertised on the vehicle and others via media, in concerts and on printed materials. Sponsors will also be invited to supply items for sale or as samples that are in keeping with the goal. A percentage of the revenue will be donated to EarthSeeds (earthseeds.net) All donations will be tax deductible.

Sponsorship monies will cover:

Tour manager to confirm media coverage, book venues during tour.

Printing of Resource Preservation Packets distributed engaging peoples commitment to simple, effective steps everyone can take to preserve or planet.

The Tour: Sarasvati’s Dream is a sound healing concert of Tibetan bowls, gongs and other harmonic instruments that relieves people of stress and brings them into an experience of extreme well being. The Sarasvati’s Dream Stewardship Tour is projected to begin in May 2008. Sarasvati, originally a Hindu Goddess is now honored in many traditions as the goddess of beauty, prosperity and culture. She began her life in the Himalayan regions of northern India as a great river that flowed into the Indian Ocean. Considered divine, her banks flourished with institutions of higher learning, art, culture and lush vegetation. People bathed in her waters, considered to be a conduit between the earth and the divine. However, over time she was stripped of her resources as people took from her, never giving back. Now all that remains of this river is a vast and barren desert. Our entire planet is now at risk. How Sound Helps in the Healing Process

Healing is a movement from disharmony to harmony and the ability to perceive of oneself and ones situation from and in a much larger perspective (divine awareness) It is movement from duality to non-duality; a process where we are released from an ego centered finite perspective of ourselves in the world and move into our essence where our vibratory energy is connected with the universe. The journey of healing is a spiritual awakening that has profound consequences on our physical well being. As we awaken, our perspective shifts. As our perspective shifts, our vibration shifts. As our vibration shifts, our cellular make up shifts. The shifts can not occur as separate entities- they affect the whole of who we are and extend infinitely. This link between body and spirit has been much ignored by the medical profession but the link is quite clear.

Sound connects our body and spirit. How? We know that different pulses stimulate different brainwave centers and that we can create brainwave entrainment through a process of sympathetic resonance.We normally entrain or fall into vibrational step to the strongest vibrations in our immediate environment. Our body is a perfect transmitter of vibration, being 70% water. Further, nerve bundles in our spine transmit vibrational sensory data to our brain and limbic system ( emotional processing center) so placing bowls directly on the body significantly increases their effectiveness.

These bowls stimulate the pea-sized pineal gland in our brain stem, a light sensitive gland that is directly connected with our third eye and when activated becomes the line of communication with higher planes of consciousness. There is still a great deal to learn about the Pineal gland but one fascinating piece of information is that to activate the Third Eye, the Pineal Gland must vibrate in unison with the Pituitary body(located in center of skull). The Pituitary, links the endocrine and nervous system, releases hormones which affect growth and metabolism and sexual development. This gland presides over our autonomic system that regulates breathing, swallowing, heartbeat and other automatic functions. So to open the latch to higher planes of consciousness, this gland that is deeply rooted in things physical is has to vibrate in synch with the mystical Pineal gland. The spiritual and physical locked together. How is this Synchrony achieved? Through deep relaxation, and Theta meditative states such as achieved with the sound of the bowls. It is said that “as human beings continue to evolve further out of matter, on the journey from spirit to matter, back to spirit, the pineal gland will continue to rise from its state of age-long dormancy, bringing back to humanity astral capacities and spiritual abilities.

BC BIKE TRIP

I thought you might like to see some pix of the latest adventure. We biked 200 miles in 7 days up to 3600' in a loop that went from Nelson, BC , to Beauford, Kaslo, Winlaw, Castlegar and back to Nelson. The ride is spectacular but lots of steep hills. There are plenty of places to jump into the ice cold water and cool off. The last leg of the journey was biked in 108 degree scorching heat...But it was worth every moment. The New Zealand trip was a hiking pilgrimage and the air was filled with the sound of exotic birds. British Columbia is filled with the sound of running water.. Every kind, lakes, streams, babbling brooks, gurgling river beds, gushing rivers, waterfalls.. Every kind of water sound you can imagine follows you along this bike route.. A feast for the eyes and ears!

Sound Healing Workshops at Cancer Center

Wow. I am excited. Just returned from a revitalizing bike trip in BC, Canada and am ready to offer some upcoming workshops at the San Diego Cancer Center. The workshops combine breath work, which is a vital part of helping clients there focus on self with intention, release toxins, and get into present moment. Between the effects of chemotherapy and the stress of having cancer it is easy to spin off into fear and be 'out of the body'. Breath work is like an anchor that keeps bringing us back to ourselves. If we can keep bringing ourselves back to it, then we are better containers for the healing sounds of the Tibetan instruments.

The workshops also combine visualizations and of course the harmonizing and soothing sound of the Tibetan bowls along with some gongs. Each workshop also has time for the participants to play the instruments and learn about their properties. I know that healing is taking ownership of all aspects of the self, so the ability to learn to use the instruments is a great way for people to engage in self healing too.

Workshops will be offered twice in July and August and then I will create a new schedule for the fall. A really exciting aspect of these workshops is that SignOn San Diego, the TV channel here will be doing a spot in their news hour on July 18th. The more exposure this modality gets, the better. Perception and Sound

A lady had a precious necklace round her neck. Once in her excitement she forgot it and thought that the necklace was lost. She became anxious and looked for it in her home but could not find it. She asked friends and neighbours if they knew anything about the necklace. They did not. At last a kind friend of hers told her to feel the necklace round her neck. She found that it had all along been round her neck and she was happy. When others asked her later if she found the necklace which was lost, she said, 'Yes, I have found it.' She still felt that she had recovered a lost jewel. Now, did she lose it at all? It was all along round her neck. But judge her feelings. She was as happy as if she had recoverd a lost jewel. Similarly with us, we imagine that we will realize that Self some time, whereas we are never anything but the Self.

This simple teaching story reminds us that our Diamond Self is always present and accessible to us. We spend so much time believing in our "stories" so that regular reminders of the "Truth" is often necessary. Recently I conducted a series of Sound Healing sessions with a person with whom there was so little dialog or feedback that it triggered some feelings of insecurity.I wondered how much the sessions were helping her. But several weeks later I got a message from another person that my client loved the sessions and was helped tremendously by them.. This reminded me that the sound of the Himalayan bowls brings us back to our Truth, to our Wholeness- with or without the dialog.
